The expansion of renewable energies is no longer solely a climate policy task, but is necessary to safeguard Europe’s energy security. A European Energy Union with an efficient and sustainable energy supply is key to reducing one-sided dependencies and to putting the supply on a solid foundation. This requires massive investments in new wind turbines, solar plants, gas/H2 backup power plants, energy storage and smart grids for the energy distribution. In addition to wind and solar energy, geothermal energy offers great potential for closing energy gaps. Europe also needs to establish a competitive hydrogen market. Safety is the prerequisite for the necessary trust in this technology. A safe and reliable hydrogen infrastructure prevents environmental damage, minimises costs and contributes to economic efficiency.
What needs to be done
- Drive forward the energy transition decisively
- Ensure a safe and sustainable hydrogen ramp-up
- Use energy efficiently
