With the trilogue agreement between EU member states, Parliament and Commission in December 2023, the AI Act is now ready to become effective. The new regulation is expected to be published in the Official Journal of the EU in summer 2024, after which there will be a transition period of 24 months for most of the new requirements. It will give AI providers, start-ups, SMEs, authorities and assessment organisations the necessary legal certainty and planning security. With the AI Act, the EU can become a global pioneer in AI legislation. Its risk-based approach provides both the necessary level of safety and protection, as well as the largest possible innovation corridor for AI systems. What is needed now is to further specify the requirements as quickly as possible through standards and guidelines and to get all players in the AI ecosystem up to speed for full compliance.
